The former Pirkle Inc. location in Atlanta includes a paper shredder.

According to an announcement posted on SA Recycling's LinkedIn page in late September, SA Recycling, headquartered in Orange, California, has acquired Pirkle Inc., headquartered in Atlanta.

"SA Recycling is proud to welcome the Pirkle Inc. team as our newest employee in Atlanta," SA Recycling announced on September 28.

In the announcement, SA also thanked its colleagues Luis Ramirez and Maria F. Castillo for safety training in Atlanta, and added: “Our family has grown to be available to the public at our new location at 598 Southwest Wales Street in Atlanta Service. Glad to have you on board!!

The 2017 "Recycling Today" article described Pirkle's paper shredder installation and the company's selection of 3Tek Global in Texas as its paper shredder supplier.

Currently, on the Pirkle website, the company says that it does not accept cars in its yard, but instead focuses on industrial customers; construction contractors, subcontractors, and merchants; and homeowners who have scrap for sale.

The metal recycler in Oregon said it expects to have substantial earnings, but lower than the previous quarter.

Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc., headquartered in Portland, Oregon, said it expects net income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021 ending August 31, 2021 to be between $43 million and $45 million. This figure is lower than the previous quarter's profit of more than $60 million in net income, but the company said that favorable market conditions continue to generate profits.

"The market for recycled metals is strong. The company's average selling price for ferrous metals has reached the highest level since 2008, and the market for non-ferrous metals is at or close to a multi-year high," the company said when talking about the situation this summer.

The company also operates an electric arc furnace (EAF) steel plant in Portland, adding: “The market sales price of finished steel has also continued to rise due to strong demand and has reached the highest level in more than a decade.”

The May fire at the Portland electric arc furnace steel plant contributed to the decrease in total net income compared with the previous quarter and resulted in a relatively unfavorable comparison with the same period last year. "It is expected that the sales of finished steel products this quarter will fall by 53% year-on-year. After completing the replacement and repair of damaged property and equipment ahead of schedule, the plant began to increase production in mid-August."

The company said that in terms of scrap, the sales of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in the fourth quarter are expected to increase by 9% and 3% year-on-year, respectively. "The sales of ferrous metals were adversely affected by the delayed arrival of a ship, and the sales of non-ferrous metals were restricted by the tight supply of containers."

Although revenue has decreased from the previous quarter, Schnitzer called the three months that it just ended "the best operating performance in the fourth quarter since the 2011 fiscal year." The company added, “Adjusted EBITDA [earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization] for the fourth quarter is expected to be between US$78 million and US$81 million.”

The trade organization states that 70% of processed recyclables are left ashore for U.S. manufacturing purposes.

The Washington-based Waste Recycling Industry Association (ISRI) stated that the U.S. recycling industry now collects approximately 130 million metric tons of materials each year for processing into commodities for new products.

The association uses the name of the National Manufacturing Day on October 1 as a reference, and uses annual statistical data and other data to recognize the recycling industry's "contribution to American manufacturing."

Robin Wiener, ISRI President, said: “When we come together to recognize the work of American manufacturers, we must recognize the countless benefits of the recycling industry.” “Recycling is manufacturing. Manufacturing depends on recycling and the industry. The key raw materials provided. ISRI is proud to represent the men and women in the recycling industry and the important role they play in maintaining American manufacturing operations."

According to ISRI, in the United States, 70% of the materials processed by the recycling industry each year are used in American manufacturing.

The association also considers energy saving as a benefit of recycling, saying that the use of recycled materials to make paper and cardboard saves up to 68% of energy compared to the use of virgin materials. ISRI added that the use of recycled plastic in the manufacturing process can save up to 88% of energy used to produce plastic from virgin materials.

In terms of metals, ISRI stated that since the commercial production of the metal began in the 1880s, approximately 75% of the aluminum produced "still used as a secondary raw material for production purposes."

The association did not mention scrap steel, but at the ISRI online conference in April, Benjamin Pickett, general manager of public affairs and government relations for Nucor Corporation, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, touted its benefit.

Pickett compared the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity level of the US steel industry at about 1, which is less than half that of the Chinese steel industry. Pickett said that Nucor's electric arc furnace (EAF) production of scrap steel emits only half of the greenhouse gas emissions of the US average.

ISRI also stated in its National Manufacturing Day press release that nearly 160,000 jobs in the United States are "directly supported by recycling and brokerage businesses in the recycling industry," and these jobs pay an average of $77,000 in wages and benefits each year, the organization said.

Atlas material handlers are now available in several of the 12 Kirby-Smith dealerships.

SMH Group US, headquartered in North Carolina, said it has added Kirby-Smith Machinery Inc. to its German-made Atlas material handling machine dealer network. Kirby-Smith Machinery has 12 branches in the Midwest and South of the United States.

SMH Group General Manager Tom Hickson commented: "We are very happy to add such a major distributor to the network.

Kirby-Smith was founded in 1983 and is responsible for transporting new and old heavy construction equipment and cranes. "Adding Atlas material handlers to our territories in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois will allow us to provide additional value to our existing customers and increase our cooperation with port companies and waste processors. Opportunity," Chief Operating Officer Jeff Weller said. Kirby-Smith Executive Vice President.

According to SMH Group, Atlas is headquartered in northern Germany and has been manufacturing equipment for more than 100 years. Atlas material handling machines include mobile industrial machines and industrial crawler machines, suitable for scrap metal, wood, bulky cargo, recycling, port applications, and vacuum operations.

Kirby-Smith joined the SMH Group’s US distributor network in North America, which also includes Linder Industrial Machinery in Florida, Carolina, and eastern Georgia; New Millennium leases in New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland; Texas ROMCO equipment in North Carolina; 5-R enterprises in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana; Cowin equipment in Alabama and western Georgia; Chadwick-Baross for New England; and Wood’s CRW in Pennsylvania.

The company said that Index will be able to collect, filter and evaluate data.

Metso Outotec announced the launch of Index, an online data collection tool designed to increase productivity, optimize cost-benefit ratios, and determine mechanical limit parameters.

According to the company's press release, the operation and production data collection system of Metso Outotec's metal recycling business transmits relevant data directly from the machine to the customer's equipment.

"It can be accessed at any time through a mobile application or from the dashboard, and with just one click, you can understand how high the current capacity utilization rate is, the materials currently being processed, how many hours the equipment has been running, or the general status of the metal recycling machine Yes," said Peter Thomas, Director of Metal Recycling Products and Technology at Metso Outotec.

All device data can be visualized, displayed and analyzed in the Index portal, and transferred to programs and systems designed for control purposes when necessary. The company stated that the server is located in Europe and is therefore subject to European data protection regulations.

Index will be provided as standard equipment for EtaCut II, EtaCut, PowerCut/LUC, PowerCut Wings/LIS and LU shears.
