York County, Pennsylvania-A lawsuit against a company in York County claims that it needs to be closed before anyone is killed.

Spring Garden Township filed a lawsuit against the J&K salvage site on Kings Mill Rd. and hopes that the court will at least temporarily shut down the paper shredder at the site.

Residents complained that the company would make "explosive" noises and cause metal to fall near their homes.

Some residents said it sounded like a bomb was falling in the middle of a war zone.

Melissa Yakim moved into her Spring Garden Township townhouse in 2014, and even less than two weeks later, she began to hear the loud noise of J&K Salvage.

"It's like'kaboom'. I can't explain it," said Melissa Yakim, a resident of Spring Garden.

She said that sometimes every day, every other day, or even twice a day.

"I think I started counting them in 2017 or 2018. In a year and a half, I think I have counted 145," Yakim said.

She started calling 911 and sent a report to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection every time this happened.

"We need to make our community safe, which is not fair to us, nor to the residents of this community," Yakim explained.

In addition to the explosions they heard, some residents also reported that metal fragments hit their homes.

"If that piece of metal didn't let it cross the road into the house, but hit a school bus or a walker or someone at a Yorkshire day school, or on a football field...they' won't survive," Yaki Mu said.

In the lawsuit filed by Spring Garden Township, the judge was required to order the company to shut down its shredder operations until a change was made.

The lawsuit contains dozens of statements and evidence proving that the company caused damage to nearby houses.

A woman living in Rannoch Ln., just behind J&K Salvage, said that she has a piece of metal in her home.

"It went through my roof, through my room, and then landed in my daughter's room," said a woman who asked not to be named.

She also said that her backyard was full of salvage metal.

"Everything that explodes will enter my backyard. Everything," the woman said.

Residents said they were happy to finally make a difference.

"I'm very happy that the town is doing something now," Yakim said.

Their purpose is not to bankrupt anyone.

"If you want to run a business, run it safely," Yakim said.

J&K Salvage and the lawyer representing the town declined to comment.
