ABINGTON, PA — The Abington Police Department has taken more than 100 confiscated firearms to be destroyed.

Local police officials say they obtained a court order to have the Pennsylvania National Guard put the 118 firearms through an industrial metal shredder and destroy them.

The guns were taken to Fort Indiantown Gap on June 9 where they were safely destroyed.

The Abington Police Department said that they came into possession of the firearms through various means, such as the firearms being used in crimes, suicides, or others that were merely turned into the police department for safe destruction.

Government-approved destruction of firearms is nothing new, as other police departments across the country routinely engage in this type of service.

Abington Township is Montgomery County's second most populous municipality behind Lower Merion Township and its second most densely populated township behind Cheltenham.
